Ariadne is another game from Eclipse Works, the makers of Magica. Made in the same engine(RPG Maker VX Ace), this game improves on most of what Magica had in both combat and world scope, but sadly not really story.

Story

You play as Fran, who lives in a village on some remote island. One day she goes out hunting and a jerk kid who wants to bang who brings her to the forbidden part of the woods. Here Fran blacks out and an ancient evil gets unsealed. Once back at the village Fran is told to find the 5 elemental flames to reseal the evil and is sent out. She wakes up in a clinic in a town near one of the flames and she gets to work so she can return to her daily life.

There’s not much to say about the story. After that a few things get added but for the most part nothing really happens until almost the end of the story when you figure out a bit more about the evil and about an event only a few years ago. Honestly if you play this for the story you will get bored as a lot of time is just spent dungeoning.

Gameplay

This game is big. This is one of the few RPG Maker games I’ve seen with a large word map and enough places to actually fill it.

Combat is turn based, but with two special things added. One is a stamina bar that limits your actions per turn, as each skill and even attacking costs stamina. The other is that you get two actions per turn. This unlocks a lot of possibilities when you add in the sheer number of skills and items the game has. You have a lot of options in each fight and with the stamina bar you can’t just spam the strongest move you have every fight, well at least against bosses you can’t. You unlock new moves by using moves so each random fight has a chance of having you learn a new technique.

As for everything else. You have a karma stat that unlocks a few h scenes and affects the ending, but that’s about it. You can get a lot of costumes that can be ripped in combat and affect which h scenes you can get. You can break barrels and urns to get items. Some enemies can rape you in combat. There’s a quest system with 30 quests to give you something to do.

The game also has a special area for high karma(bad) players where the gameplay changes. Instead of fighting you need to survive sexual assault and mining while buying gifts to raise some characters affections to find a way to escape. Its an interesting place that has a very different theme to everything else in the game.

H Scenes and Other Stuff

Porn wise the game is mostly the usual corruption stuff. Each town has about 5 h scene chains where Fran gets more and more into the event happening, and each town’s scenes get more extreme as you go along. No voices in the scenes, and the length of the scenes and writing is alright, though inconsistent sine this game had 3 translators. Fran has the same weird thigh size as the girl from Magica, where they are huge compared to the rest of her. H types include rape, beatings, and some kinds of prostitution.

This game has something I’ve never seen before. The in area sprites are the size of RPG Maker XP, which are twice as tall as in VX and VX Ace. On the world map the game switches to to the shorter sprite size. I like this, as XP allows for more detail on the costumes. Speaking of those, each h scene uses a different costume so visually they are usually different. Sadly though about 6 outfits never get h scene treatment and of those only 2 have in game uses. The reward for the hardest dungeon in the game is an outfit that doesn’t have porn tied to it, which makes it feel like a lackluster reward.

Overall the game looks and sounds good for RPG Maker. A lot of assets are premade.

Verdict and Save

Overall I want to like Ariadne. It’s a big RPG with a more interesting combat system that makes you use various skills so you can learn new ones. The thing is tough, the game was too long for me. I complained about the lack of story, but the h scenes being grouped together in towns as heavily as they are is also a problem. The game literally goes dungeon/combat to porn to dungeon/combat for each area and this got tiresome with such a long game. The game isn’t bad but it can definitely tire you out.

Save contains all moves, quests finished, all clothing(including some you can’t get in game), and all h scenes unlocked.
